ESE circular-conscious bins prove increasingly successful in Germany

18.06.2020

People are fast understanding the importance of circular economies. Government and wider society also want to see a change in public procurement. Circular-conscious products that offer a better carbon footprint are logically in high demand with municipalities.

ESE has been pioneering the use of recycled plastics in its containers for decades already, and we were also the first plastic bins manufacturer in the world to be awarded the prestigious Blue Angel ecolabel back in 2016. Beyond using recycled materials, ESE has gone a step further by adopting circular economy-conscious product design. This circular-conscious bin design strategy is increasingly gaining recognition in the German market, as more and more municipalities focused on Green Public Procurement are choosing to partner with ESE.

The City of Koblenz decided to exchange their bio bins with a much more sustainable version featuring a biofilter lid for better hygiene and a body made from recycled plastics.

Ostholstein has implemented ESE’s adaptable CL bins made entirely from recycled plastics — it has even opted not to add a grey batch colour based on the idea that slight colour impurities are perceived as typical for sustainability and a lower carbon footprint.

The City of Munich has opted for new 4-wheel bins made from recycled plastics instead of new virgin materials, thus saving crude oil and massively reducing energy inputs and environmental impact.

Tens of thousands more ESE bins with their Blue Angel ecolabel will soon be visible on Germany’s streets. This widely-recognised ecolabel is the only proof today that the bins have been produced using at least 80% certified recycled plastic without harmful substances. The municipality of Cochem-Zell recently chose ESE for the Blue Angel ecolabel, and the Oberhavel district, which had already implemented more than 70,000 Blue Angel bins last year, is so convinced of the concept that it is poised to add another 35,000.

The City of Hamburg is set to introduce tens of thousands of Blue Angel bins over the next few years, thus giving a visible signal of sustainability policy to its inhabitants as well as the millions of visitors it attracts every year.

Working with our partners to continuously increase the number of bins made from recycled plastics is a big step forward for our climate and environment. But even more can be achieved through our customers choosing our adaptable, futureproof bins engineered with a circularity and sustainability-conscious design. Our products have a long service life ahead before they one day become recycled plastic again. Our CL series is the sustainable flexibility-first choice, due to its marking solution with coloured clips, its many options for re-use and, of course, its proven RAL quality.
